ABOUT THE BOOK

The Steam House (La Maison à vapeur) is one of Jules Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires, combining technological imagination with a sweeping adventure through British India.

The story centers around an extraordinary steam-powered mechanical elephant pulling a mobile residence across India – a wonderfully characteristic example of Verne combining real 19th-century technology with fantastic engineering, exploration, and adventure.

The English-language work was issued in two parts, The Demon of Cawnpore and Tigers and Traitors. Complete matching sets are considerably more desirable than individual volumes.

A scarce, complete, illustrated and exceptionally handsome 1881 First U.S. Edition set worthy of a serious Jules Verne, Victorian literature, early science fiction, or antiquarian book collection.
